The results from NAFT show that dalteparin that is begun in either a pre-op or post-op regimen reduces venographic DVT compared to warfarin. Pre-op dalteparin reduces symptomatic DVT in the immediate post-operative state compared to warfarin, but dalteparin given pre-op also causes more major bleeding than warfarin. A reduction in venographic DVT may lead to less frequent post-thrombotic syndrome, but careful follow-up will be necessary to establish this benefit.
